Jerome Champagne has written to the heads of the world’s 209 football associations amid fears he could miss out on the Fifa presidential election.
The former deputy general secretary of the sport’s governing body announced his decision to stand for the role in January 2014 and has since been joined in the race by Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein, current chief Sepp Blatter and former France star David Ginola(fifa coins buy).
But the 56-year-old has so far failed to receive the five letters of presentation from national organisations which are a minimum requirement for all candidates.
And, with all letters needing to be submitted by January 29 to confirm candidacy for the May 29 poll, Champagne has called upon the world’s national chiefs to summon up their will for transparency, democracy and justice in a bid to add last-minute supporters.
“I want to thank the FAs which have already sent me their letters. Despite the fact that there had never been too many candidates nor eccentric ones, the statutes were amended in 2013 to restrict the eligibility to the Fifa presidential elections. Thus, while I would have already qualified under the old rules, I am still not a candidate under the new rules until I have five letters of presentation,” explained Champagne in his letter.
“I have privileged the defence of Fifa at the very moment when so many still hope to weaken it with the objectives of limiting the world governance of the game, or enslaving it for their own interests. I have also refused the demagoguery to blame only one person for all the wrongs in football when the responsibility is obviously collective.
“Finally, I have opposed the current simplistic analysis, (cheap fifa 15 coins) according to which all is wrong in Fifa, by presenting a program to continue what has been done correctly during the last forty years and to change what needs to be changed.
“Despite all of that, I do not yet have all the five letters.”
The Frenchman went on to suggest that there is a sense of apathy towards the outcome, with many expecting Blatter to be re-elected to the role with little opposition. There was also a side-swipe at Ginola’s Paddy Power-backed campaign, (fifa 15 coins)which has called on football fans to supply financial aid for its bid but has failed to deliver a detailed platform for change.
“The feeling exists that the final result of the election is set and that it would be risky to sign them,” he added. “There is also the fear of being singled out or punished. Blatter is the current favourite to win the mandate, extending his spell as president which began in 1998.
